The new library

Yesterday on my day off I visited the new library in town. Ok apart from how much the whole thing cost I have to say I’m very impressed. Greymouth is an old town and as much as I like history and historical buildings, I also believe that sometimes we need modernization as well.

While I was attending my family reunion in Browns Bay while we were on holiday in Auckland recently I spotted this mural on a small wall opposite the venue. It was painted by artist Juliana Coelho as part of a community beautification initiative funded by Auckland Council’s graffiti prevention team. Local school students and police staff also helped with the painting.

Hoi An

I love Vietnamese food, it’s my favourite. I have Chinese ancestry on my mother’s side so I love most Asian food as long as it has a bit of spice and chili. While in Orewa we found this restaurant – Hoi An so we were excited to try it.

Inside the restaurant – this was in the late afternoon so they had only just opened for dinner. We were the first ones there.

This was what I ordered; Vietnamese vegetable rice paper rolls on the bottom and I think it was a Pork noodle salad on the top. I would definitely go there again and order.

Browns Bay War Memorial

Browns Bay beach on Auckland’s North Shore is where I grew up. I spent ALOT of time here at this beach as a child although I don’t remember this war memorial being there back then. 

Known as the “Stone of Remembrance” it was unveiled in Anzac Day 1968 with the stone being dedicated by Rev. M. Walsh on April 25th 1968.

While walking around Orewa on our last holiday just after a storm I spotted this mural on the wall of the local surf club. Painted by artist Rebecca Stone this is name “Waste to art”.

One lane Bridge

So many one lane bridges in New Zealand. This one is in between Murchison and Greymouth.

So Winter has finally kicked in here, although with a few frosts we’ve still had a mild season compared to last year.  In the last few days we’ve had some huge thunderstorms. Lucky my chickens have roosts inside their coops and nesting boxes they can hide in to escape the rain. B collects leftover food from his work each day for them so they are very lucky to get scrambled egg and bacon, I also add food scraps from here along with dog roll and rice for protein over Winter. They are just getting over their seasonal molting where they lose a lot of feathers but apart from taking a brief break from laying eggs, they have started up again.

Northcote Tavern

The Northcote Tavern is a building that as a teenager I use to walk past sometimes – one of my best friends when I was at high school use to live not far from here so we spent many weekends hanging around the area.

It was originally known as the North Auckland and Ferry Hotel built by immigrant Philip Callan in the 1850s from from bricks that he made at the nearby Sulphur Beach. The original hotel burned down in 1884 and the current building is what stands today.

This mural we spotted on the wall of a shop at Manly, Whangaparaoa in Auckland is painted by Adam Driver and depicts the richness and importance of marine life around the area.
