Rows

Garden centres are busy here at the moment. We were at our local hardware store looking at flower punnets and seedlings. I was trying to find small Lavender flowers as I plant them around my chicken coops, apparently they help to prevent mites over Summer but they didn’t have the ones I wanted in the end. That is B to the right looking at vegetables.

We ended up buying some cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and pumpkin seedlings in the end. I’m not sure how long the seedlings will last in the garden with my chickens roaming around during the day. I do have netting over the vegetables but that doesn’t always keep them out. sigh…

A couple of the shops in town have been selling cheap mass produced (the usual) Halloween products. I haven’t bought any but I do like to look for bargains just before Christmas…. anyway Halloween really isn’t that popular here – we don’t get any trick or treaters as we live semi-rural 5 minutes out of town. I’ve been thinking about Samhain though – seeing as we live in the Southern Hemisphere we are in the opposite seasons…so Spring for us right now. Instead of it happening on October 31st, it would be April 1st which is the middle of Autumn for us. Hope that makes sense…

Ahh isn’t wonderful wandering around a garden centre looking at spring seedlings. So much choice, so much anticipation. But hope the chooks don’t get there first

I read somewhere about the amount of money Americans spend on throwaway tat at Halloween compared to the amount being spent by the world on cleaning up plastic pollution in the oceans. One years halloween expenditure would fund 27 years of ocean clean up (at current rates). insane amounts of wastefulness essentially.

PS if you have access to a lavender strike some cuttings. I did mine in autumn but you might be able to do soft cuttings in spring – do some research. I got a variety called Dillydilly – it stays small/low.

I’ve got lots of lavender, I plant them under my fruit trees to attract bees and around my chicken coops to prevent mites, so far so good. I have tried to get cuttings from them but it’s very hit and miss.

Anything greenhouse-like is medicine. I hope you find lavender.

As a Canadian it is a bit discombobulating to see seedlings with Halloween crap.

  5. Wij wonen nu in een apartement waar we juist deze week planten hebben gekocht voor de bakken op het balkon, winterviolen.

Amy! I found you — all by myself (l0l) — you know you’ve been following a blog for a long time when the blogger has moved her blog and moved in real life more than once during that time!! (You could say the very same things about me)> I really like the look of this version of your digital life! And more importantly it looks like your real life is going well! I enjoy hanging out in a garden center, even though we don’t actually garden any longer — plus I love feeling like it’s Spring again when I read your blog.

I’m wishing you lots of luck with your vegetable garden. I hope you something from all those plants. Home grown veges are the best.

So glad you commented on my blog so I could follow back to yours…and enjoy your springtime activities. Of course you all can be celebrating the opposite times of the agricultural calendar, like Beltaine is the opposite to Samhain.

It looks like a nice spring day after all the cold blustery weather we’ve had. Enjoy.

I like wandering around places like that even if I don’t buy anything. I hope the netting works.

The thing about garden centers is that it´s really hard not to buy too much. I don´t have a garden now so it´s not a problem anymore but I remember wanting to have everything when I was in a garden centre 😀 Good luck with all your plants and keeping them safe for the chickens.

Many garden centers here are already starting to focus on the Christmas season. We don’t really celebrate Halloween; instead, we have an alternative children’s holiday on November 11th.
Hopefully, you found what you were looking for. Have fun and good luck with your gardening projects!

So great to read about your preparation for spring. We have autumn but its a start for a lot of different veggies as well. Have you tried to take cuttings from lavender? It is very easy and a good way of grow more and more of the kind that works in your garden. Glad to find you – will keep an eye out for new posts.

I always find it hard to imagine Christmas (and Halloween) celebrations in the southern hemisphere as so much of the traditions and decorations still seem to be tied to our climate in the north. Great to be able to see your spring photos as contrast to all the falling leaves and bare branches here just now, though! 🙂
