There are lots of little alley ways in Auckland City. This one on the viaduct is next door to a bar/restaurant that was screening the World Cup soccer earlier this year. It’s very very popular for people to go to places like this so they can watch sports events.
We have been watching the rugby tri-nations here over the last couple of months. First the All Blacks played against Argentina and Italy, then against South Africa and coming up is the Bledisloe Cup against Australia. I don’t have paid tv with Sky as it’s out of our budget but luckily TV 3 which is 3 screens it later on for us.
This morning until Monday morning the rain road into town is closed for repair. We have had problems with the road for many years, way before we moved here to the West Coast. At one point the road actually slid off onto the railway tracks below but now after being fixed time and time again it’s getting water from the mountains above that are coming down and washing the road away bit by bit. After patching it and patching it and patching it, the powers that be (NZTA) have now decided a culvert under the road needs replacing so all the cars and trucks that travel past my house each day now are detoured around a different direction which takes about 20 minutes extra. Luckily today it’s my last day of work for the week so I only have to endure it for one day.
I ended up getting my eye test at the optometrist. $140 later which wasn’t too bad but apparently my left eye is slightly weaker than the right eye so each lens I need is different but I’m fine to drive, it’s just new reading glasses that I needed. They gave me a prescription so I ordered 2 new pairs of glasses online for around $100 instead of paying up to $400 NZD for 1 pair at the optometrist office then I took my certificate to renew my driver’s license which says I’m ok to drive. Such a rigmarole…

Blnheim has lots of lanes – they’ve not even bothered to name them… First Lane, Second Lane, etc up to Seventeenth Lane (that I’ve found so far). It makes me cross when a sport as important to the nation as rugby, sells out to pay-to-view broadcasters. Hope your road is sorted properly and soon.
Lanes often have spots that locals love. Aging infrastructure is a problem in Canada too as the wealthier and corporations get tax breaks even though they can afford more taxes. Sigh.
Road repair is often frustration with closures and delays. Hope you can put up with this for one more day. The sports bar is a great place to watch the “big” game. I also watched the World Soccer games, but rugby not so much. I always appreciate your comments on the pictures I post on my photo blog.
There’s always problems with roads here when it raining. Fixing them takes forever. Have a nice weekend.

Rugby isn’t widely played in the Netherlands; we are more of a football nation.
But we certainly know a thing or two about road closures. These days, many roads, bridges, and viaducts here are also being closed—either briefly or for extended periods—due to construction work. That is the result of decades of minimal investment in maintenance.
