Earthquake prone

This is the 2nd building in town which is now due to be demolished at some point. This use to be the old courthouse, designed by government architect John Campbell and built in 1911/1912. It was offered to the public for someone to buy for $1 but no one was interested, now the present owners have decided to demolish it as it is earthquake prone and doing the necessary work to strengthen it is going to cost too much.

The 1st building which was demolished about 2 years ago due to the same problem was the Royal Hotel, also privately owned. When it came down, there were plenty of spectators watching the action and taking photos. Now it’s an empty space. As much as I love old buildings, no point having them there if they aren’t safe. Greymouth seriously needs some modernization to get with the current century.

  1. Sad to see a town losing its character and history. There is a solicitor (I think) in Whanganui who is buying, renovating and strengthening older buildings and getting good tenants to use them, both commercial and private

  2. Sad in a way the the twon is losing buildings that give it character. The buildings that replace them will be faceless, generic, boxes that could have been built anywhere. I do understand the cost vs practicality issue but if not for earthquakes our towns could build into a visible record of their history. Greymouth… once very wealthy on mining.

  3. Ik hou van oude gebouwen en vind het altijd jammer als ze verdwijnen. Maar als het niet anders kan….

It is a pity when landmark buildings are lost. But sometimes there is no other choice—especially when safety is at stake. And if no one is interested in taking one on, even for a symbolic sum, then that is the end of the road.

This is unfortunate, but safety is important!

Sad but probably for the best. Two beautiful buildings.

  7. Moving on…

  8. A sad loss of architectural heritage, but preservation must be balanced against public safety and practicality; hopefully Greymouth can find a way to modernise without losing too much of its historical character

  9. Very sad, both are/were beautiful.
